So... after watching one and a half seasons of Rome I've finally finished it. Learning from my previous pistol I made this from plasticard but still covered it all in tin foil before layering on the spray paint. This meant that once I scrapped off the paint for weathering effects it kinda looks like metal. Also I played with adding weights to it so that when you hold it it feels real - really makes a difference, feels likes it's about 1kg. The hardest parts by far were the wax seal (used real wax seal but without a stamp it proved difficult) and the Imperial Navy icon which took a while and doesn't look all that great for it. And yes those are real prayers and litanies on the seals - taken from The Infantryman's Handbook I picked a selection of the most appropriate/navy-ish (was impressed that there was one specifically for a lasgun). Overall the design is based on the Cadian style pistol but I lengthened it a little as I thought with the wooden grip it looked a little more 18thC navy somehow. Also to avoid confusion that is a lanyard attached to the handle, just incase it's dropped in a boarding action all is not lost.
All in all pretty pleased with it, although it looks a little shiny with the varnish layer but meh, it's a necessity.
